Emote grammar

Post by starsignal » Sat May 09, 2015 2:43 am

So I've already sort of made my case to Japheth about emote targets that switch to first person, but if nothing else, is there a way to massage emote grammar so we don't see things like "You waves" that make the grammarian in me cringe? If nothing else, having something like, "You emote: [Your now lovely and correct emote with your sdesc]"

The inbuilt grammar system should be taking care of that sort of stuff, I didn't realise that was what you were getting at when we had our earlier discussion. If you see anything like that as an echo, post it in here and I'll fix it up.

Well, I was getting at seeing anything in the first person in general, because I take issue with that philosophically. But if nothing else, I'll be happy to eliminate wonky grammar!

The engine should always be showing you first person messages, as per convention.

In emotes, you can make your own emotes come out a little more grammatically correct if you're willing to put in the extra effort in the syntax, e.g.

Code: Select all

emote waves to ~brute, and blows him a kiss
Would render rather unhandsomely as:

Code: Select all

You waves to a heavily-scarred brute, and blows him a kiss
And to him as:

Code: Select all

A comely maiden waves to you, and blows him a kiss
Whereas if you were so inclined, you could do the following:

Code: Select all

emote wave|waves to ~brute, and blow|blows ~!brute a kiss
Which would display as:

Code: Select all

You wave to a heavily-scarred brute, and blow him a kiss
And to him as:

Code: Select all

A comely maiden waves to you, and blows you a kiss

Oh, neat. I'll have to play around with that!
